"No need to fear, milord. No assassin is going to get to you tonight. See, all the guards on the walls are still alert and walking their posts..."
When cast on a corpse within 3 rounds of its death, the Corpse Patrol spell animates the corpse just enough for it to perform the most basic tasks, such as standing guard, or walking along a patrol route. The corpse can hold items in his hand such as a torch or a weapon, but lacks the fine motor control to manipulate objects in any other way, such as opening the latch of a door. A walking corpse will avoid obstacles in its path, but will not otherwise interact with its environment, does not respond to external stimulus, cannot speak or make noise, or attack in any way. Wounds on the corpse will stop bleeding but do not disappear; anything more than a casual inspection reveals that the corpse is obviously dead. The web of necromantic energy is fragile: if the corpse takes even 1 point of lethal or nonlethal damage from any source, the spell ends.
