The body is rendered hard as ice, and covered in a rime of ice. In spite of appearances, the creature is still alive. Barely.
With a failed Fortitude save, the creature is frozen solid and rendered into a cryostasis. The creature is still alive, but their biological processes are arrested so that only 1 day passes each year for them. They do not need to eat, breathe, or sleep, and are in a helpless, dreamless state. Their bodies are covered in an icy rime which gives them hardness 4 for the duration. The cryostasis will last forever unless the ice is melted by exposing them to heat above 120 degrees Fahrenheit for 24 hours, subjecting them to 50 points of fire damage in a single round, or a second casting of cryostasis.
The caster can also set up a contingent effect (as per contingency) in which the cryostasis melts away as well. Using this, the caster can use it as a beneficial utility spell, enabling affected creatures to survive and endure places and events they otherwise would not have. Some have even known to cast it before long journeys across long distances, and to cross the airless void of space.
Creatures immune to cold are immune to the effect of this spell.
Material Component: A chunk of alchemically stabilized ice worth 250 gp.
