The painting of the Scourge of Carpathia was certainly spooky, you swore it's eyes followed you. Brushing off the unease, you turn to leave only to hear the sound of a sword slicing through air...
This spooky art piece is not actually haunted, but it is instead a replica of a supposedly real haunting phenomena said to inhabit many an ancient mansion. It is a portrait of a creature, typically a humanoid or other subject likely to obtain a portrait of themselves. It can exhibit an uncanny ability to seem like it's watching you, but in truth this is simply an optical illusion. However the painting is sentient (Int, Wis, and Cha 10) and is able to observe it's surroundings. It is usually given orders to guard an area or spy on creatures. When creatures it is hostile to appears, it reaches out of the painting and attacks.
Regardless of the appearance of the attack, the painting gets an attack roll (see below), and deals untyped damage. It attacks as a medium creature in the closest empty square, and it able to take unlimited attacks of opportunity. If the creature it strikes has an amount of hp equal to (its caster level x 5, or 35 for the example haunted painting), it must instead make a Will save DC 14 + 1/2 CL (DC 17), or be slain instantly. This is a mind-affecting fear effect.
The attack roll is equal to it's caster level + 4, and it deals 1d6 points of damage per caster level of the item. The base item is caster level 7th, 4900 gp. For higher level versions, the price is (caster level squared x 100). For every odd level (9th, 11th, etc), the bonus on attack rolls rises by +1. For example a CL 10 Haunted Painting has a +15 attack bonus, deals 10d6 damage, and is a DC 19 Will save. It costs 10,000 gp.
