Heartstinger[edit]

The Heartstinger uses the Functional Weapons of Legacy variant rule.

This dagger has a long thin and slender blade made of silvery metal that seems to reflect the world around it perfectly. Its short handle possesses no hilt, and is the entire weapon feels light in the hand as if it might just up and float away. As you swing it, its motions naturally guide it towards the opponent's chest.

The Heartstinger is the signature weapon of legacy of the Thousand Daggers discipline, said to have been wielded by its public founder Oiwa Mochizuki. It is also said the weapon is single-handedly responsible for the slaughter of the entire Obake-Shi clan and that it was done of the dagger's own volition and will, but this cannot be verified. It starts out as a +1 dagger with the ability to turn the weapon invisible at will with unlimited duration. This is useful for concealing the weapon, but it becomes visible once hostile action is taken and provides no bonuses to the wielder for attacking with it. However as various rituals are made and power is gained, the weapon starts taking on stronger powers. There are five rituals that are performed, they must be performed in order (the 2nd ritual must be completed before you start the 3rd, even if you achieve the 3rd level pre-requisites). Rituals cost gold (in the form of feeding the weapon raw materials) and xp, with an additional pre-requisite. Once the 1st level ritual is unlocked, the dagger displays its omen effect. You can take time out and spend 8 hours bringing the weapon to the next level once you have the pre-requisites.

The Heartstinger is a unique magic item, on its way to becoming an artifact. While it has a price, it cannot be completely destroyed. If reduced to 0 hp, it instead falls inert in a broken condition, and unable to be used until repaired, but is not destroyed as items usually are. It is treated as an artifact against the effects of mage's disjunction.

Omen: As the dagger gets more kills it transforms from a glassy silver, to pink, to red, to black, finally becoming so pitch black it appears like a blot in space. The color slowly returns over the course of a week.

1st Ritual (Blood-Spilling Rain)[edit]

Animated Dagger (Su): You gain the effect of a Dancing, Variant enhancement with this dagger. This enhancement does not count towards its overall price.

Heartsense (Su): The wielder becomes aware of the beat of any creature's heart, able to sense them as if using blindsense out to 60 ft. It only applies against creatures with hearts or blood, or a blood equivalent, so most constructs, plants, oozes, and undead are immune.

On Bladed Wings (Su): The weapon gains the effect of the Throwing and Returning enhancements, and the weapon returns instantly instead of at the start of the next round allowing multiple attacks with the same dagger due to a high BAB. These enhancements do not count towards its overall price.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +3, Must hit three different opponents with thrown weapons within three rounds without being struck in return, and must kill one of said opponents with one of the attacks. Opponents must be at least your CR −3.

Cost: 8000 gp, 320 xp

2nd Ritual (Heart-Eating Demon)[edit]

Awaken the Vengeful Ghost (Ex): The true nature of Heartstinger begins to surface, revealing a subtle intellect hidden within. Not as strong as an actual intelligent weapon, it nevertheless has a mind of its own. It has Int 10, Wis 10, and Cha 10, telepathy out to 100 ft to its wielder only, and your alignment one step closer towards Evil. Though its alignment does not match yours, it never engaged in an Ego battle or disobeys your orders. It merely whispers to its owner to take revenge whenever possible, which the owner is under no compulsion to follow.

Regardless, the intellect is useful for various reasons. Any wielders other than an creature who has unlocked its 2nd ritual take 2 negative levels while wielding the weapon. It also has your skill ranks (but not other modifiers) and has your vision modes and abilities. Because of this, you no longer need to worry about concealment when using your Dancing, Variant ability and the wielder does not have line of sight.

Find the Gap (Su): You gain the effect of the ImpalingMIC enhancement with this dagger. This enhancement does not count towards its overall price.

Heart-Eater (Su): You gain the effect of the FleshgrindingMIC enhancement with this dagger. If it kills the creature, the creature's heart is staked such as for the purpose of interacting with creatures such as vampires. This enhancement does not count towards its overall price.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +6, Must kill an opponent of at least your CR with a critical hit, and leave the weapon inside the target until the encounter is over.

Cost: 32,000 gp, 1280 xp

3rd Ritual (Rage of the Ghost Assassin)[edit]

Demon Claw (Ex): The weapon may now act like a hookshot, with the maximum rank of your first five range increments for the length of its non-existent "rope", a retraction speed of three range increments a round, and a drag capacity of up to your heavy load in carrying capacity or 300 lbs, whichever is more. You can use this ability to drag creatures to you (if lighter than you) or drag yourself to creatures (if heavier than you) at an attack action. You still provoke attacks of opportunity for your movement.

Heartsight (Su): The Heartsense ability of the wielder improves, now granting them effective blindsight out to 30 ft, with the same limitations as Heartsense.

Improved Animated Weapon (Su): The dancing ability of the weapon improves. It now may make an extra attack at your highest attack bonus as a free action once per round. This does not stack with the effects of other dancing weapons, but does stack with the extra attack typically granted by abilities such as haste. The weapon must be dancing to use this extra attack.

In addition, the amount of time your weapon can dance is now unlimited.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +9, Must kill 3 opponents of at least your CR -3 with your dancing Heartstinger while holding no other weapons in your hands, using no offensive spells, SLAS, or spell-completion items.

Cost: 72,000 gp, 2880 xp

4th Ritual (Trail of Crimson Petals)[edit]

Enlightened Spirit Blade (Ex): The sentience of the blade improves. It now adopts the user's mental ability scores (if better) and while it is dancing outside of the wielder's square but still in line of sight, the wielder cannot be flanked. As a free action on their turn, the wielder can toggle their vision to view things from the blade's perspective, though this blinds the wielder for the time.

The blade now gets an Ego score as appropriate, but it only uses it against non-wielders. Combined with the negative levels it can inflict and the masterslaying ability, others grasping the blade is a very dangerous gambit.

Flickerstrike (Su): The ability for the blade to go invisible as a free action now partly applies to the user. The user flickers before the first attack of every round, treating them as if they were briefly invisible. They gain the +2 bonus for being invisible, as well as qualifying for things such as sneak attack. It only applies on the first attack each round.

Kamitachi Drill (Ex): As a standard action, you can make a single attack against all creatures in a 120 ft line, with a single attack roll against them all. You can also make a full attack action as a full round action against all creatures.

Wielder's Judgment (Su): You gain the effect of the MasterslayingBoVD enhancement with this dagger. This effect can be suppressed on command, since the blade is intelligent. This enhancement does not count towards its overall price.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +12, Must kill an opponent, then attack and kill an opponent directly behind them in a line with your dagger in the same round. One of the opponents must be at least your CR -3.

Cost: 128,000 gp, 5120 xp

5th Ritual (Irresistible Pull of Death)[edit]

Death Walk (Su): When you use your Demon Claw ability, you teleport the distance between yourself and the target (or teleport them to you) without provoking attacks of opportunity for movement. You may still provoke from throwing ranged attacks in melee, if threatened. You can thus "retract" as a free action, and thus effectively teleport up to five range increments as an attack action by throwing your blade in the desired square.

Greater Animated Weapon (Su): You gain an additional benefit to your dancing weapon. While dancing, you may make a full attack action to attack all creatures once at your highest attack bonus within the range of one move action. It can go around obstacles short of total cover and avoid allies. The flight of the blade ends where it started.

Heartsting (Su): You gain the effect of the Vorpal enhancement with this dagger, but it works by piercing the heart (typically killing the creature) rather than removing the head. As a result it does not function against creatures with no hearts, though it does function on creatures which would otherwise be immune to critical hits. Then it makes a kill in this matter, it drains the creature of blood completely and the blade turns pitch black instantly. This enhancement does not count towards its overall price.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +15, Must complete an encounter where the only movement you make is done via grappling hook. The encounter CR must be at least of your CR +2. You must move like this a minimum of 3 times like this through the encounter, and kill at least one creature you've moved towards.

Cost: 200,000 gp, 8000 xp
