Kafkaite[edit]
Kafkaite is a mysterious crystalline mineral sometimes found drifting in the void of space and rarely counted among falling meteorites. The means of its production is unknown, and in truth it seems to pertain to no known atomic material. The substance appears to be a distortion in space and time or some manner of bosonic material that otherwise behaves like material crystal. It seems to have no measurable mass, yet does not travel at c as physics dictates it should. Kafkaite naturally forms trapezohedron-shaped crystals and, when broken, naturally breaks off into new trapezohedron shapes, with any irregular chunks immediately collapsing into a smaller trapezohedron. In fact, when collided at high speeds, two pieces of kafkaite can be rejoined into a single piece, though the speeds required become prohibitively expensive the larger one gets. Kafkaite comes in many colors, but the majority come in topaz orange or dark red hues.
When kafkaite is subject to energy (typically in the form of physical pressure, heat, and electromagnetic radiation), kafkaite produces "reality fatigue" in the surrounding area, with strength proportional to the energy involved and size proportional to the size of the trapezohedron itself. This reality fatigue weakens the effect the environment has on the world, and seems to strengthen magic. Within the area of reality fatigue, spells and other supernatural abilities act as if they were +2 levels higher for the purposes of caster level, effective HD, and other variables. In addition, environmental effects are halved when possible. Damage from lava would be halved, the penalty for an opposing alignment from a plane would be halved, and so forth. It can even retain magic on the Outlands when approaching the spire, cutting the range of magic negation in half. However, magic and deific powers still shut off at 50 miles away from the spire (as opposed from 100 miles as normal).
When afflicted by reality fatigue, the area is reported to suffer from a vague "blurring" effect of all senses, and even mechanical detection methods become increasingly inaccurate and prone to errors. This is due to the fact that energized kafkaite makes things a little less "real", allowing one to breach otherwise physically impossible barriers. For this reason, the main use of kafkaite by advanced starfaring races is in the production of Faster Than Light drives. By specific manipulation of kafkaite samples, they can produce the effect of raising the effective speed of light in their area, allowing nigh-unlimited acceleration without encountering any time-warping effects or increased mass.
The maximum energy one can pump into kafkaite is unknown, but it is known at very high energies that its effects strengthen significantly, producing a higher level boost and more resistance to the environment. Extreme energy levels have been tested, but has encountered many problems of generators becoming increasingly unreal and exposed to unusual and abnormal effects, including the complete vanishing of several testing facilities.

Kafkaite can be sometimes found, traded, and sold, but because the production method is unknown and it is very rare to begin with, kafkaite is considered a minor artifact. For the purposes of fragmenting it, kafkaite has hardness 100 and 1 hp, needing to take 101 damage before splitting. It's rarity and utility make it extremely valuable for even the smallest amount. Small pieces of Kafkaite is often traded for land rights on habitable settlements. Large pieces of Kafkaite have been traided for planets. If traded for gold 1 Oz could be reliable sold at auction for 250,000 gold.
