Mogeko Sage[edit]

Most Mogekos are dimwitted and destructive hedonists. The key word in the previous sentence being "most". Some Mogekos are all too aware of the ruin their race is spiraling towards, and seek a way to stop it. Mogekos who seek their race's salvation step onto the path of the Mogeko Sage.

Making a Mogeko Sage[edit]

Mogeko Sages are guides and protectors. They focus on helping the good guys come out on top, whatever it takes. They are capable warriors, but do not excel in combat; they focus more on helping out from the sidelines and directing allies towards worthwhile goals.

Abilities: It's hard to pin down exactly which ability scores are the most useful for Mogeko Sages (except for Intelligence, which is central to their class features, and therefore absolutely vital), but they seem to have more use for the mental ability scores than the physical ones.

Races: As the name implies, only Mogekos can become Mogeko Sages.

Skills: To become a Mogeko Sage, one must have 8 ranks in any three of: Decipher Script, Gather Information, Diplomacy, Knowledge skills (each counted separately), or Spellcraft.

Alignment: A Mogeko Sage must have a nonevil alignment; Mogeko Sages seek to save their race from the quagmire of decay it's steadily sinking into, and step one of that process is not being part of the problem.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Mogeko Sage.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Mogeko Sages gain proficiency with one weapon of their choice.

Spellcasting: Mogeko Sage levels stack with levels in cleric, philosopher, or sorcerer (chosen at 1st level) to determine spellcasting capabilities. (Mogeko Sage grants no spellcasting capabilities in and of itself, nor does it advance class features other than spellcasting.)

Seeker of Truth (Sp): Mogeko Sages refuse to remain ignorant of reality. They seek to understand their species' predicament, so they can take steps to correct it. To meet this goal, a Mogeko Sage can use any spell from the divination school whose spell level is equal to or less than their Mogeko Sage level as a spell-like ability once per day per class level. The caster level for the divination effect is equal to the Mogeko Sage's class level ×2 or the Mogeko Sage's character level, whichever is higher, and the save DC is equal to 10 + the Mogeko Sage's class level + ½ total levels in other classes + the Mogeko Sage's Intelligence modifier.

Abandon Nonsense: In abandoning the childish, chauvinistic, hedonistic, and just all-around repugnant ways of their fellow Mogekos, Mogeko Sages free up their minds for more rational and functional thoughts. The Mogeko Sage's racial penalty to Intelligence is lowered to −2, and at level 5, it disappears.

Paragon of Good Will: Mogeko Sages are representatives of the slivers of goodness that still remain in the Mogeko race, despite the efforts of the Mogeko pseudo-hive-mind to stamp it out. As such, Mogeko Sages are better at getting along with the other races. Starting at level 2, the Mogeko Sage gains a +2 racial bonus to Diplomacy checks, replacing the −2 racial penalty taken by other Mogekos. At level 6, the racial bonus improves to +4. At level 10, the racial bonus improves to +6.

  • No, Except Yes: Mogeko Sages know how to misdirect when necessary. A 3rd-level Mogeko Sage gains a +2 racial bonus to Bluff checks, replacing the −2 racial penalty taken by other Mogekos. This racial bonus improves to +6 when used against evil creatures, or +4 when used against neutral creatures.
  • Noble Guide: Mogeko Sages, as the name would imply, are highly learned individuals who can be counted on to know what they're talking about. At 4th level, a Mogeko Sage gains a +2 racial bonus to Gather Information and all Knowledge skills. At 8th level, the racial bonus improves to +4.

Smite Evil (Su): A 3rd-level Mogeko Sage can smite evil, just like a paladin (albeit not quite as well as a paladin, considering that Mogeko Sages are scholars first and warriors second). When performing a smite attack on an evil creature, the Mogeko Sage adds its Intelligence modifier to its attack roll and its Mogeko Sage level + ½ levels in classes other than Mogeko Sage to its damage roll. The Mogeko Sage can smite evil once per day at 3rd level, twice per day at 6th level, and three times per day at 9th level. If the Mogeko Sage accidentally smites a creature that is not evil, the smite has no effect but is still used up for the day.

Probe Thoughts (Sp): Mogeko Sages are experts at seeing how others think. At 4th level, the Mogeko Sage gains probe thoughts as a spell-like ability usable once per week. At every even-numbered level after 4th, the Mogeko Sage can use probe thoughts more frequently, culminating in being able to use it at will at 10th level. The save DC is equal to 10 + the Mogeko Sage's class level + ½ total levels in other classes + the Mogeko Sage's Intelligence modifier, and the caster level is equal to the Mogeko Sage's character level or twice their Mogeko Sage class level, whichever is higher.

Unlike Mogeko Snatchers, Mogeko Sages use this ability not to break a person's will, but to discern others' goals. The Mogeko Sage will guide others towards their goals, if said goals are good; if said goals are evil, this ability alerts the Mogeko Sage to danger and helps them to eliminate threats to righteousness.

Imbibe Power (Sp): A 7th-level Mogeko Sage has learned enough of the ways of the universe to use it to their advantage. Once per day, as a full-round action, a Mogeko Sage can attune its body to absorb magical energy. Once it does so, any spell, power, spell-like ability, or psi-like ability used on the Mogeko Sage is absorbed, with its effect being negated, and its energy is absorbed by the Mogeko Sage in the form of a pool of spell levels. Essentially, the Mogeko Sage becomes like a rod of absorption or staff of the magi in that it can absorb spells and powers that would affect it, positively or negatively. The Mogeko Sage can even absorb maneuvers and maneuver-like abilities, though it's far from guaranteed to do so; while imbibing power, the Mogeko Sage has martial defense equal to 6 + (the Mogeko Sage's class level × 2) + (levels in classes other than Mogeko Sage up to character level 20th ÷ 2) + character levels after 20th. The Mogeko Sage will only successfully absorb a maneuver or maneuver-like ability that fails to defeat its martial defense; if the Mogeko Sage's martial defense is overcome, the maneuver affects it normally. Physical attacks (including attacks made as part of a maneuver) affect the Mogeko Sage normally. Imbibe Power, being a spell-like ability, requires concentration to maintain, and if the Mogeko Sage is interrupted (such as by taking damage), it must make a Concentration check or lose that use of the ability, wasting the spell levels it has acquired. A Mogeko Sage can continue imbibing power for a number of rounds equal to half its class level, rounded down, though it can stop early whenever it wishes. Continuing to imbibe power is a full-round action. Imbibe Power is the equivalent of a 7th-level spell, with its save DC being equal to 10 + the Mogeko Sage's class level + ½ total levels in other classes + the Mogeko Sage's Intelligence modifier, and the caster level is equal to the Mogeko Sage's character level or twice their Mogeko Sage class level, whichever is higher. At the start of the Mogeko Sage's turn when it stops imbibing power voluntarily, it puts the stored power to use in one of two ways:

  • It can release the power in a burst of righteous energy, dealing 2d10 damage per absorbed spell level to all evil creatures within Medium range, with no save or spell resistance allowed. Neutral creatures instead take 1d10 nonlethal damage per absorbed spell level, and are entitled to spell resistance and a Will save for half damage. Good creatures are healed for 1d10 damage per absorbed spell level. The Mogeko Sage is excluded from the effects, and can choose to exclude any creatures it considers allies (so as to avoid knocking out neutral creatures who are on its side).
  • It can use the power to empower itself and all allied creatures within Close range to excel in all things, gaining a sacred bonus to all rolls and character-dependent values that oppose rolls (such as save DCs and caster levels against dispel checks) equal to the value of the absorbed spell levels. (For instance, if 5 spell levels were absorbed, this ability would grant a +5 sacred bonus to everything.) This sacred bonus lasts for 2 hours per Mogeko Sage class level.

I Know God's Desires: Over the course of their studies, Mogeko Sages discover true religion, and either forsake the farcical spirituality of the Mogekos, or seek to refine it into true holiness (as opposed to what Lord Prosciutto currently is, which is a laughingstock and/or embarrassment to all the real deities). A 9th-level Mogeko Sage loses the hindrance of Misguided Worship; it can apply its full Wisdom and Charisma scores to the spellcasting and turning abilities of its cleric and favored soul classes, should it have levels in either.

Savior of the Species (Ex): At 10th level, the Mogeko Sage fully becomes a representative of the potential of Mogekos — an emissary for new, functional ideals to tear down the ill-conceived foundations of Mogeko society and replace it with something better. A 10th-level Mogeko Sage gets a +4 bonus to all rolls and values that oppose evil creatures (including attack rolls, damage rolls, save DCs, caster level checks, skill checks, saving throws, et cetera). This bonus stacks with all other bonuses, including those gained from Imbibe Power. In addition, a 10th-level Mogeko Sage is immune to harmful mind-affecting effects (including fear, charms, and compulsions), as its conviction and determination to do the right thing is unshakable.

Ex-Mogeko Sages[edit]

A Mogeko Sage that ceases to be a Mogeko or becomes evil loses the ability to advance in Mogeko Sage.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Mogeko Sage[edit]

Religion: Mogeko Sages are a surprisingly diverse lot in terms of religion. Some seek a deity more worthy of veneration than Lord Prosciutto, while others see Lord Prosciutto's hidden potential and seek to promote his true message of peace and goodwill.

Other Classes: Mogeko Sages are avid learners, and welcome the company of other individuals who seek out knowledge, such as wizards. They believe that the pen is mightier than the sword, so to speak, and so tend to be rather... put off by those who don't seem to know how to do anything but fight, such as barbarians. Mogeko Sages despise evil in all its forms, as it reminds them all too keenly of the crisis faced by their species; they do not tolerate blackguards, Mogeko Snatchers, mindbreakers, and anyone else who is fundamentally wicked and rotten to the core. In fact, Mogeko Sages really, really hate Mogeko Snatchers, and the hatred is mutual; each class is convinced that the other is driving the Mogeko race to ruin.

Combat: Mogeko Sages don't have a clear-cut role in combat. They actually tend to be more useful out of combat, where they can put their talents with divination magic and diplomacy to good use. However, Imbibe Power can be quite useful if the Mogeko Sage's allies pump it full of magical energy, and can turn the tide of a hopeless battle when used properly.

Mogeko Sages in the World[edit]

Run? I'm tired of running...
—Nega-Mogeko, Mogeko Sage

Mogeko Sages are, in many ways, the only reason a visitor to the Mogeko Plane can survive its horrors. They oppose the depravity of their fellow Mogekos in any way they can, waiting for their chance to topple the plane's current corrupt regime and restore honor and dignity to the Mogeko race.

Daily Life: Mogeko Sages research the secrets of the multiverse, searching for a way to cleanse the Mogeko race of the evil that has infected it.

Notables: There were once seven notable Mogeko Sages — Somewhat Strange Mogeko, Prosciutto Fairy, Blood Spirit, Hasu, Mofurru, Mogecuckoo, and Nega-Mogeko. Before his descent into depraved insanity, King mogeko, creator of the Mogeko race, assigned each of them the task of overseeing one floor of Mogeko Castle. When King mogeko became a hedonistic, perverted tyrant, dragging the rest of the Mogeko race along with him, the Seven Special Mogekos, as they came to be known, remained immune to the corruption, and when Yonaka Kurai was spirited to the Mogeko Plane, they defied King mogeko and helped her to escape and return to her home. Unfortunately, Hasu had been captured and crucified by the depraved and sadistic Moge-ko before Yonaka even arrived, and expired as she and Nega-Mogeko watched helplessly. As for Nega-Mogeko, he seemingly gave his life in a pitched battle against King mogeko himself, where he challenged the tyrant to a duel and very nearly defeated him. The other five Special Mogekos still remain in Mogeko Castle, awaiting a hero who can help them put an end to King mogeko's madness once and for all... and it's possible that Nega-Mogeko may have escaped his doom at the last moment, and is now biding his time, waiting for his chance to return and save the Mogeko Kingdom from its decay.

Organizations: Mogeko Sages are generally outcasts among their kind, and seek the company of other Mogeko Sages. They also welcome the opportunity to share the company of others with a love for learning, such as wizards.

NPC Reactions: Other Mogekos usually see the Mogeko Sage as a spoilsport at best, or living cancer that must be destroyed at all costs at worst. NPCs of other races typically distrust the Mogeko Sage at first (after all, they're still a Mogeko), but tend to warm up to them over time as the Mogeko Sage demonstrates their sincere commitment to the welfare of others.

Mogeko Sage Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (the planes) can research Mogeko Sages to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge (the planes)
DC Result
15 Mogeko Sages are Mogekos who fervently believe in the value of knowledge, and have abandoned the childish ways of their conspecifics. This has the result of making them far more intelligent than other Mogekos.
20 Mogeko Sages are aware that the current Mogeko culture is immature, unsustainable, and can only lead to the Mogekos either self-destructing or being obliterated by other sentient races. Therefore, they seek to reform Mogeko society, and are natural-born diplomats as a result of their good intentions.
25 Mogeko Sages are masters of divination magic, especially mind-reading. They use this ability to guide other creatures towards actions that will promote the welfare of all beings. High-level Mogeko Sages can absorb magical energy and use it to obliterate evil outright or empower themselves or their allies, and the most powerful Mogeko Sages are immune to all forms of mind control and are extra-powerful when fighting evil.
