Vampiric Steel[edit]

A pale glossy metal which is somehow always cold to the touch, strikes with vampiric steel weapons enrich the wielder and armor drains those it touches. It is believed that vampiric steel is formed by forging normal steel with the blood of the strongest vampires in a place devoid of light, life, and hope. They seem to reflect pale moonlight best, growing a dull gray in bright sunlight.

A weapon made of vampiric steel takes the base damage of the weapon (including any solid enhancement bonus, but not any special abilities, Strength modifier, or other damage sources such as Sneak Attack) and grants the user the same amount as temporary hit points. Temporary hit points overlap, they do not stack, and they last up to 1 hour before fading away. This life absorption does not function on anything without a Con score. Ranged weapons still draw energy, but vampiric steel has no use on the projectiles themselves.

Armor made of vampiric steel is difficult to get a grasp on without injuring oneself. Any creature which strikes with a natural weapon, unarmed strike, or grapple attempt takes 2 points of damage with each hit while the wearer heals themselves 2 points of damage. Care must be taken as it does not differ between enemies or an ally's friendly touch attack.

Shields made of vampiric steel only really benefit the undead. Bucklers and light shields absorb the first 5 points of positive energy which comes your way each round and converts it into negative energy instead. Heavy shields absorb 10, and tower shields absorb 15. This change occurs before any resistances or immunities.

Vampiric steel is so costly that weapons and armor made from it are always of masterwork quality; the masterwork cost is included in the prices given below. Thus, vampiric steel weapons and ammunition have a +1 enhancement bonus on attack rolls, and the armor check penalty of vampiric steel armor is lessened by 1 compared to ordinary armor of its type.

Vampiric steel has 10 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness of 10. It take quarter damage from cold and electricity, is healed by negative energy, half damage from fire and force, and full damage from acid, positive energy, and sonic damage.
