Alter Memory

This spell alters the memories of a subject to something of your design. There are two forms of this spell, the quick version and the detailed version.

In the quick version, those which fail the save are rendered fascinated for 1d4 rounds during which they are highly suggestible. You can redefine the events of the last 1 minute/caster level suggesting an alternative record of events. You don't have fine control over the details of these memories as they are created in the mind of the target, so suggesting "that wasn't a dragon, it was a balloon" may have one target think of a small red balloon, while another might think of a white giant balloon. A modified memory does not necessarily affect the subject’s actions, particularly if it contradicts the creature’s natural inclinations. An illogical altered memory is dismissed by the creature as a bad dream or a memory muddied by too much wine. As long as the spell persists they will be unable to recall the original memory correctly.

In the detailed version, the target is fascinated for as long as you concentrate up to a maximum of 1 round/level, during which time you probe around their mind and can do one of several things, as seen below.

  • Eliminate all memory of an event the subject actually experienced. This spell cannot negate charm, geas/quest, suggestion, or similar spells.
  • Allow the subject to recall with perfect clarity an event it actually experienced.
  • Change the details of an event the subject actually experienced.
  • Implant a memory of an event the subject never experienced.

As before, illogical memories can be dismissed. You can alter up to 1 minute/level in memories, no matter how far back. In addition they have no memory of the time they spent fascinated.
