Crystalbound[edit]

A crystalbound weapon is given a symbiotic alien parasite which grips the exterior of the weapon, giving it semi-living properties and a desire to spread.

The crystalbound template can be added to any suit of armor, shield, or weapon crafted by various creatures with access to outer space or "alien" realms. The substance used for crystalbound is technically a crystalline ooze from alien worlds known as quiescencezoa. The created items are quasi-alive, binding to their host items like a symbiotic being. A crystalbound armor or weapon has all the base statistics of the normal item except as noted here.

Requirements[edit]

The creator of an crystalbound item must have at least 10 ranks in Knowledge Dungeoneering or Xeno, or the ability to create grafts.

Crystalbound Armor and Shields[edit]

The crystalbound template can be added to any suit of armor or shield. The items are covered in many large ice-like crystal shards, even eating into or consuming much of the base metal or leather they are anchored into and causing discoloration and obfuscation not unlike cracked ice. In spike of the ice-like appearance, it is not cold. Pieces appear to be held together by some telekinetic force, and shards can break off to flex with movement or to alter shape, especially on cloth based materials. Though not alive technically or even sentient, it gives off light when seen by Lifesense, and pings as having a mind under detect thoughts as if it had an Int of 3, though it does not possess any thoughts and simply gives off a stable psychic hum.

Cost: 1000 gp

Affinities: AnchoringMIC, Death WardMIC, Ectoplasmic FeedbackMIC, Fire Resistance, Fortification, and Time ButtressMIC. Crystalbound armor and shields help damp out entropic forces such as negative energy and heat.

Special: In spite of the ability to telekinetically move chunks of itself about to handle movement of the host below, the crystalbound items are still large and chunky beasts. Crystalbound armor and shields gain armor spikes or shield spikes for free, and use the armor enhancement bonus as the weapon enhancement bonus for the spikes, but increase their armor check penalty by 2. They provide a measure of protection against things which would affect the host's mind, soul, or life force. Against mind-affecting abilities and any effects which alter souls or transfer or harm life force directly (such as negative energy damage and vampiric touch) the creature gains a +2 bonus on saves against them, and resistance 5 against those effects if they deal hit point damage. While wearing crystalbound armor or a crystalbound shield, the body cannot be animated into an undead.

Crystalbound Weapons[edit]

Crystalbound weapons are covered in sharp pointy crystal bits regardless of the sharpness or bluntness of the base weapon. While appearing impractical, the use of the weapon is unaffected. If damaged, bits and pieces of the crystal flake off and float nearby, still held by the telekinetic force inherent to the quiescencezoa, until it shatters into glassy dust upon destruction.

Cost: 2000 gp

Affinities: Axiomatic, BindingMIC, Frost, Icy Burst, ImpedanceMIC, Incorporeal BindingMIC, Paralytic BurstMIC, and ParalyzingMIC. Crystalbound weapons feed off entropy and chaos, and work well as anti-chaos and anti-heat weapons.

Special: An crystalbound weapon flakes off dust on things they strike, dust which grows rapidly on sources of great entropy and change and rendering them inert and stable. A crystalbound weapon can extinguish any mundane fire up to a 5 ft cube at a touch, and extinguish magical fire effects with an opposed caster level check (use character level of wielder, minimum 1). When a creature is killed by a crystalbound weapon, they are instead crystallized as the dust activates and grows rapidly from the entropic shock of death. Treat as if subject to flesh to stone rather than simply dying, though the statue is subject to shatter and is vulnerable to sonic damage. Incidentally, the wielder is not immune to this effect and if they die with a crystalbound weapon wielded in hand, they will also crystallize on death.
