Where there is power, there are mortals seeking to gain it; even when said power would destroy them as well, some madmen and madwomen will still cling to the opportunity. The depraved cultist is a class for the nihilist who seeks to end everything, the insane doomsaying cultist, the kindly pastor with a dark secret, and so on. The methods of various dark cultists are extremely different; some gain power in high society while others work alone as dregs in the street, and anything in between. Not all depraved cultists are interested in dying for their master; many believe they have escape plans, contingencies, or perhaps that their devotion will spare them, though most are usually wrong.

Becoming a Depraved Cultist[edit]

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Depraved Cultist.

Spells: A depraved cultist receives spells from the dark power she worships. Her caster level is equal to her character level. A depraved cultist chooses between her intelligence, wisdom, or charisma to determine bonus spells per day and the DC of her spells. The depraved cultist casts spells spontaneously. She starts with 4 level 0 spells and 4 1st level spells and gains 2 spells known each level after the first. The spells must be of the highest level she can cast or lower and may be chosen from both the Cleric spell list or the Sorcerer/Wizard spell list. A depraved cultist's spells count as both arcane and divine; this requires an unholy symbol and incurs spell failure from armor or shields.

Eldritch Favor: A depraved cultist gains a 'eldritch favor pool'; she possesses a number of imagination points equal to her class level + 2. She uses her eldritch favor to pay the insight cost or madness cost of dark insight spells or to avoid dark insight or madness. Her eldritch favor pool recovers at the start of each day and can be used in the following ways:

  • Whenever she has to pay an insight cost when casting a spell, she may subtract a single point from her eldritch favor pool instead.
  • Whenever she would gain madness, she can instead lose a number of points from her eldritch favor pool equal to half the madness she would take (minimum of 1).
  • Whenever she would gain dark insight, she can instead lose a number of points in her eldritch favor pool equal to the dark insight she would have gained.

Occultist: A 2nd level depraved cultist gains the occultist feat as a bonus feat.

Dark Minded (Ex): A 3rd level depraved cultist increases the amount of madness she needs before she mindbreaks by her class level.

Black Disciple (Ex): A 4th level depraved cultist gains black disciple as a bonus feat; if she already has it, she gains another [vile] feat she meets the prerequisites of.

Frenzy (Ex): A 5th level depraved cultist no longer mindbreaks as long as she has 1 or more dark insight; whenever she gains enough madness to mindbreak, she instead enters a frenzy, losing 20% of her hit points, 1 point of dark insight, and falling under the effect of rage as a barbarian of her character level. After entering her frenzy, she starts losing 2 points of madness at the start of each of her turns, ending her frenzy once she reaches 0. After her frenzy ends, she is confused for 1 minute, bypassing any immunity she might have.

Eldritch Minister: A 6th level depraved cultist now extends vastly in power; her dark knowledge feat now extends to 10 dark insight instead of 5.
