Turn your rage into a weapon which can cleave the heavens! 10 3 Good Good Poor Good Other Other

Wrathblade[edit]

Do not let my calm demeanor fool you, ranger! Now is not a good moment for your insubordination!
—Stacker, Human Wrathblade, "And that's how the party infighting started...", Record of Final Moments of Danger Team

Wrathblades are a strange lot, for they are barbarians who do not rage. In fact at their most angry point they excuse an air of frozen calmness, a face of stoic stone, and a will of the strongest iron. But do not be fooled, for they have not given up their rage. Instead, they have bottled up their rage, let it fester, and ultimately solidify into a deadly weapon which cuts through all opposition. Nothing is worse than the rage of a wrathblade, and the weapon they wield.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Wrathblade.

Alignment: Any alignment restrictions the wrathblade was under or would be under in later levels are lifted. Codes of conduct (such as paladin's codes or druid's denial of metal armor) are not. The wrathblade is often one of the most lawful kinds of barbarians there is in terms of self control and discipline, and yet they hold a raging chaotic heart within themselves. Many are former monks who were filled with rage, yet never forgot their training.

Advancement: Levels in wrathblade are added to levels in barbarian (or any other rage granting class) for the purposes of rages per day (including improvements to rage, such as greater and mighty rage).

Iron Heart (Ex): While manifesting their wrath, the wrathblade is simply unflappable. They become immune to all moral penalties and fear-effect for the duration of their manifested wrath, and any morale penalties and fear-effect they were under before are suppressed.

Manifest Wrathblade Weapon (Su): Whenever the wrathblade is in a rage (as per the barbarian class feature) they can take a move morale action to collect their thoughts and manifest their rage into solid form. They lose the bonuses and penalties from raging (except the bonus to Will saves which remains for the duration), and instead manifest any non-ammunition weapon they are proficient in. The weapon often appears clearly unnatural as it is a product of their rage and often takes on spiky, flaming, or smoky forms as a result, and it vanishes at the end of its duration. The weapon exists for as long as their rage would normally persist. When the rage (and thus the manifested wrath) ends, the wrathblade is not left fatigued. Because this is a form of rage, the wrathblade cannot enter a rage while manifesting their wrathblade weapon, and vice versa.

If the wrathblade possesses the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, they can manifest two wrathblades in the same action. Both weapons have the same enhancement bonuses, but need not be the same type of weapon.

When they gain greater rage, it counts as a weapon one size larger for the purposes of damage. When they gain mighty rage, it counts as a weapon two sizes larger.

Sunder Bond (Su): The wrathblade weapon can be sundered, and if it is the rage within detonates explosively and dramatically, as if using Detonate Wrathblade (see below). To prevent this, as a non-action the wrathblade may transfer any number of its hit points to its weapon to repair it or otherwise prevent its destruction. This damage is lethal damage which bypasses any damage reduction and regeneration.

Wrathblade (Ex): The wrathblade weapon manifested by the Manifest Wrath Weapon class feature is a vessel which contains the wrathblade's fury. This weapon is a masterwork weapon of its type with an enhancement bonus of +1, plus an additional +1 bonus every odd level as shown above. Projectile weapons automatically manifest their own mundane ammo, or it may be loaded with special ammo you possess.

As they level the wrathblade weapon grows in strength and may be further enhanced by the enhance wrathblade class feature. It can be buffed with temporary magical effects but cannot be enhanced by permanent means, not even via gish gauntlets. The weapon automatically is sized to fit their manifester, even if they change size or shape.

Wrathblade weapons are incapable of harming their manifester, leading some wrathblades to sheath their own swords inside them as an effective intimidation tactic.

Enhance Wrathblade (Su): At 2nd level (and every even level beyond) the wrathblade may enhance their wrathblade weapon with special abilities up to the maximum shown above. For example a 10th level wrathblade can choose a single +5 enhancement (such as Vorpal) or several smaller enhancements, up to +5.

Alternatively, they can add a fixed price enhancement up to 6000 gp for every +1 they use, or they may add a single material to their weapon (such as adamantine) up to 3000 gp for every +1 they use. These abilities are chosen upon manifesting your wrathblade weapon, and may be different every time.

Focus Wrath (Ex): A 2nd level wrathblade can choose to focus their wrath on a single specific creature. If they do so, all wrathblade bonuses (such as the enhancement bonus on the wrathblade or the damage reduction granted by this class) only apply against that one creature, but the wrathblade's effective class level increases by +2 for the purpose of choosing abilities and the strength of their class abilities. It does not grant class abilities the wrathblade does not already possess.

Iron Body (Ex): The 3rd level wrathblade holds their body together with pure rage. They gain DR/- equal to their class level while manifesting their wrathblade weapon.

Pierce Defenses (Ex): The fury of a wrathblade breaks through all things! At 3rd level wrathblade treats his manifested wrathblade weapon as if it was ghost touch, allowing it to strike at incorporeal foes. At 6th level, he ignores the damage reduction based on materials (such as DR/cold iron). Finally, at 9th level he ignores damage reduction based on alignment (such as DR/good).

Detonate Wrathblade (Su): Since the manifested wrathblade weapon holds all of the wrathblade's anger, breaking it can have terrible results. But sometimes, the 4th level wrathblade may want to employ this explosion of rage to their own gain. As a standard action, the wrathblade can detonate their own wrathblade weapon (which they need not be in contact with at the time), causing the weapon to explode in a 20 ft radius burst, dealing 1d6 points of damage per character level of the wrathblade. Creatures get a Reflex save for half, DC 10 + 1/2 HD + Con. Detonating the wrathblade weapon immediately ends its duration.

Iron Vigor (Ex): At 5th level the wrathblade's rage not merely holds it together, but actively knits it back into fighting shape. They gain fast healing equal to 1/2 their class level.

Iron Persistence (Ex): The 7th level wrathblade's rage can hold its body together even when it clearly should have been splattered and destroyed. The wrathblade can survive in negative hp points which would have left him dying or dead as long as the duration of their manifested wrathblade weapon continues. However they are staggered until they gain enough hit points to reach 1 hp or greater. They can be still killed through means other than straight hit point damage.

Iron Rebellion (Ex): The 9th level wrathblade lets nothing break his iron hard focus of his rage. The wrathblade becomes immune to enchantment while manifesting their wrathblade weapon.

Rapid Manifest (Su): At 10th level, the wrathblade can manifest their wrathblade weapon as a free action.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Wrathblade[edit]

Combat: You were the melee muscle, and you remain so. However rather than mindlessly attacking you regain your cool and can actually choose enhancements idea for the present situation. Of course, you don't lose your rage so you can choose to to rage normally whenever you want.

Advancement: Because wrathblade manifesting is a form of rage, any class which advances race helps you.

Resources: Wrathblades are not the type to organize, but many have training in typically lawful oriented organizations such as monks and paladins and serve as a temper to their temper.

Wrathblades in the World[edit]

Take this! My anger! My sorrow! And all of my rage! ERUPTING BURNING GAUNTLET!!!
—Domo, Human Wrathblade

NPC Reactions: The only thing scarier than the furious man is the furious man who seems suspiciously calm about it. If their habit of breaking bones while cool and collected is known, such figures are often feared as intimidating presences.

Wrathblade Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge Local or Psionics can research wrathblades to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge Local or Psionics
DC Result
10 A wrathblade takes their rage and turns it into a physical weapon. This leaves the wrathblade frighteningly calm and collected.
15 Wrathblades are difficult to stop when manifesting their rage, and they move forward with a stubborn persistence through injury and sometimes death.
20 Powerful wrathblades's rage can pierce almost any substance, and nothing can sway them from their goal.
30 Those that reach this level of success can research specific wrathblades, their weapons of choice, behavior, motives, location, and other information.

Wrathblades in the Game[edit]

Sample Encounter: The Don of the mafia is said to have a frightening and brutal sociopathy about him, and yet none is as calm, collected, and charismatic as he. He has a lot of sway and a lot of power, both personally and politically, making him a dangerous opponent no matter how approached.
