Slider[edit]

You can't hurt what you can't catch!
—Scarlet, Drow Slider, Tales of the Scarlet Spider

Fast! Things in the universe are so fast! It takes a lot of work for things to go fast, but in the realm of the subatomic these things go fast with seemingly no effort. By unlocking their secrets you slide through space without moving, gliding in a single step a thousand miles and flickering about in a blur. You are a slider, sliding your way to victory.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Slider.

Fast Movement (Ex): The slider is fast, or seems to be, as they move between spaces to shorten the distance. They increase their base land speed by +10 ft, and another 10 ft every four levels beyond (5th, 9th, etc).

Partial Class Advancement: The slider class gives advancement to pre-existing class features, such as sneak attack, bardic songs per day (but not bardic music known), caster level (but not spells known), and initiator level (but not new maneuvers). It does not grant new class features, nor does it grant spells per day, spells known, or similar abilities.

Slide (Su): As a swift action, the slider can abruptly move up to 5 ft per HD each round. Though it is movement, it's not a move action and therefore is no good synergizing with other move actions (such as drawing a weapon or activating a rush). Sliding can otherwise be done at will. You provoke attacks of opportunity for movement as normal.

Sudden Slide (Su): At 2nd level, you can slide so suddenly as to disrupt others plans. You can slide as an immediate action, but half the normal distance. You still provoke, and a creature whose turn was interrupted mid-move or mid-attack can choose to use the remainder of their move action, or redirect any further attacks as needed. For example, a fighter who no longer can reach their target can use the remainder of their full attack to fire their ranged weapon, or a charging character could choose to continue charging past you and hit your ally that was behind you. Targeted effects still affect you if you are within spell range, though spells with attack rolls will miss.

Force Movement (Sp): At 3rd level you can cause a creature within 60 ft to make a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 HD + your highest mental ability modifier), save negates. On a failed save, you may move another creature using your slide ability. You slide half the normal distance (as if using sudden slide). The forced movement can provoke attacks of opportunity. Even after you gain the slippery movement ability, this movement still provokes attacks of opportunity.

Sprint (Ex): The 3rd level slider can rush ahead in a burst of speed. Once per day they may make a spring as part of movement, increasing their movement speed by x10, but only being able to move in a straight line. At 6th level, they are able to use this once per hour, and at 9th level they may use it once per minute.

Sliding Teleport (Sp): The 4th level slider can move at infinite speed with their slide. They effectively gain teleport (self only) at will as a standard action, with a cooldown of 5 rounds between uses. Unlike a normal teleport, you are limited to where you can travel by your movement speeds; thus you cannot teleport through a locked door unless you could walk through it, nor could you teleport into the air without a fly speed, or teleport if you are otherwise immobilized. On the other hand, effects which stop teleportation do not stop this "teleport".

Wide Step (Ex): At 4th level a slider can step through space when stepping away tactically. They make take a 10 ft step instead of a 5 ft step.

Damage Speed (Su): The 5th level slider can increase their speed, and they use the same knowledge in reverse to decrease yours. As a standard action the slider may make a touch attack, forcing a Will save (same DC as Force Movement). The target takes 1d4 damage per character level from the temporal disruption, and their speed is reduced by 5 ft per class level (minimum 5 ft). The effect remains for 5 rounds, or if the creature takes a standard action to break the supernatural effect over them.

If the damage would cause the creature to hit 0 hp, the slider can choose to leave them at 1 hp, but completely immobile. This lasts forever, until an outside creature makes a standard action to break them out of the supernatural effect, or you end the penalty as a free action. The creature is not paralyzed and can still talk, perform purely mental actions, and be damaged.

Sliding Shift (Sp): Using the same ability as sliding teleport, the 6th level slider can plane shift (self only) instead. This is a teleport effect as is affected by abilities which block teleportation. The cooldown for this ability is 1 hour, and draws from the same source as sliding teleport. Thus you cannot perform either a sliding shift nor a sliding teleport while in cooldown.

Hasty Rush (Su): The 7th level slider can accelerate themselves as a free action a number of rounds per day equal to their character level. They gain the effects of haste, as if using Boots of Speed. The duration of the haste effect need not be consecutive rounds.

Slippery Movement (Su): At 7th level, movement done by the slide and sudden slide abilities no longer provoke attacks of opportunity. In addition you gain the domain power of the Travel Domain as a cleric of your level. This stacks with cleric levels you possess if you already have the Travel domain.

Sliding Greater Teleport (Sp): The sliding teleport ability upgrades with greater teleport (self only). Alternatively, you can use the normal teleport version, but now bring along others as the spell. As long as they remain in contact with you, they slide along with you at effectively infinite speed and are subject to the same restrictions as your motion.

Improved Force Movement (Sp): The 9th level slider improves their force movement ability. They now can move others the full amount (as if using slide) rather than half. You can also use sliding teleport and sliding shift on unwilling targets, with a Will save to negate (same DC as Force Movement). In both versions you must travel with the creature to the new location. A creature which successfully saves is immune to further attempts for 24 hours.

Drain Speed (Su): Your damage speed ability improves at 10th level to drain speed. Any damage to speed you do becomes an enhancement bonus to your own speed which lasts for 1 hour. In addition, you can render the target with temporal stasis (no save) instead if immobilizing them at 0 hp.

Slide Gate (Sp): The 10th level slider's sliding shift improves. When they shift, they can choose their exact destination and leaves a portal behind as the travel form of gate. Like gate, they may concentrate to keep the gate open for others to follow through.

Time Slide (Sp): Why slide through space when you can slide through time? The 10th level slider can choose to slide backwards or forwards in time 1/day. If they slide backwards, they can revert the actions of 1 round. All events in the last round are returned to the end of the slider's last turn, but the slider retains memory of the event.

Sliding forward in time is easier, and the slider can attempt to slide any amount forward in time. This behaves as if they affected themselves by time hop. However once set, they are stuck hopping forward the full way so if they choose to hop ahead 3 days, and in 3 days the area they stood in has become a war zone, they will return in danger.

The epic Slider gains a bonus feat (selected from the list of epic slider feats) at 11th and every three levels beyond (14th, 17th, etc).

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Slider[edit]

Combat: Made for speed, sliders make excellent skirmishers and two-weapon fighters as it opens up the option to move and full attack. It's almost like pouncing! Others may still find use, if only for mobility issues.

Advancement: Skirmishing classes and classes which benefit from full attacks (like monks) benefit best, so this class tends to synergize with classes which advance these aspects.

Resources: Sliders may or may not have allies, the art of sliding is obscure and strange.

Sliders in the World[edit]

Gotta go fast!
—Donut Steel, Needlemus Slider

NPC Reactions: How does a man like that go so fast? It must be magic...

Slider Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge The Planes can research sliders to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge The Planes
DC Result
10 Sliders go fast, so fast! It's like they can move without moving their legs or something. They're even fast enough to dodge attacks!
15 Sliders can go fast enough to effectively teleport. Some can even move fast enough to leave this dimension!
20 Powerful sliders are able to rip open holes in the universe in their passing, or even sliding through time.
30 Those that reach this level of success can research specific sliders, their whereabouts, motives, behaviors, and other abilities.

Sliders in the Game[edit]

Adaptation: If your game ever had the Speed Force... this is it.

Sample Encounter: A black needlemus named Ow is on the loose, swearing and shooting people and doing other edgy and illegal things. Go arrest him! And make it fast!
