Dragon Paladin[edit]

The Dragon Paladin is a VH variant of the Paladin class, crossing it with the sorcerer to make a powerful arcane combatant. The method of creation of a Dragon Paladin typically require the bonding between a dragon and a potential sorcerer, the dragon awakening the sorcerer's hidden potential to become a much more combative fighter. Some dragon paladin just awaken naturally, finding strange bonds with dragonkind and an affinity for the energy and alignment of one of it dragon ancestor.

Making a Dragon Paladin[edit]

Abilities: A Dragon Paladin require a high Charisma for her spellcasting and abilities or a high Constitution for her breath weapon. Any other ability score depend on the Dragon paladin's fighting style.

Races: The bulks of dragon paladins are human, elves and dragonborn. Otherwise the class can be found in population with large amount of sorcerers, doubly so if the population is close to a dragon.

Alignment: Any.

Starting Gold: As Paladin.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Dragon Paladin.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Dragon Paladins are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, with all types of armor (heavy, medium, and light), and with shields (except tower shields).

Spells: A Dragon Paladin cast spells spontaneously like a sorcerer, similarly she has spell known. She acquire her spell from the following spell and also take spell from the Cleric, Druid, Paladin or Sorcerer/Wizard list but only if they have an energy descriptor matching her chosen energy. The Dragon Paladin use her Charisma for the purpose of determining the DC of her spells and her bonus spells per day. Additionally for the purpose of selecting spells and benefiting from dragon spell, the Dragon Paladin count as a Sorcerer.

  1. Provided the dragon paladin has a high enough Charisma score to have a bonus spell of this level.

Battlecaster: A dragon paladin receive both Combat Casting and Ironclad Mage as bonus feats.

Draconic Oath: A dragon paladin doe not swear to the Gods, rather in order to enter the class she must swear an oath to a powerful dragon. At the start of her career she must choose between acid, cold, electricity and fire as well an alignment other than True Neutral. She use the chosen energy type for her class features. Alternatively the Dragon paladin may choose an exotic energy type (such as force damage), she use this as her chosen energy however all of her Dragon paladin's class features which rely on her chosen have it damage dice reduced by one step (by example her elemental smite only deal 1d4 per two class level). This doe snot affect her spells.

If the Dragon Paladin's alignment cease being within 1 step of the chosen alignment she 'fall'. This has no real effect as the Dragon Paladin's power are inborn, however dragon associate with her previously chosen alignment will behave negatively toward her. She may 'atone' by changing alignment again or by making another pact with a dragon whose alignment matches her.

Dragontouched: A dragon paladin gain the dragontouched subtype.

Elemental Smite (Su): As a swift action usable once per encounter, a dragon paladin can wreath his attacks in energy. The dragon paladin's next attack deal an additional 1d6 points of her chosen energy damage plus an additional 1d6 per two class level. The Dragon paladin receive an additional use of Elemental Smite at 5th level and each 5 level thereafter.

Alternatively when using her elemental smite, the dragon paladin may decide to spend it for the day instead of for the encounter. If she does it affect all of her attacks and last for 1 rounds.

This ability count as smite evil for the purpose of meeting prerequisites.

Dragonbreath (Su): A 2nd level can deliver a powerful but limited breath weapon. Each day she can deal a number of d6s in her chosen energy damage equal to her dragon paladin level x her Charisma modifier. The breath weapon is delivered in a 30-ft cone or a 60-ft line with a Reflex save (DC 10 + 1/2 Class + Constitution modifier) for half damage. She may only deliver up to her dragon paladin level in dice in a single breath and she must wait 1 round before each use of her breath weapon.

If gain an ability which allow her to use her breath weapon at-will she instead recharge over time, regaining one dice each minute she does not use it.

Dragon's Grace (Su): A 2nd Dragon Paladin add her Charisma bonus to her saving throws.

Dragon Magic (Sp): At 2nd level the dragon's blood within grants the dragon paladin some arcane spell-like abilities. She may select a single 1st level spell from the sorcerer/wizard spell list. She may cast this as a spell-like ability 1/day. If the spell involves an expensive material component, focus, or xp cost, he must pay this cost as normal. At level 4 and every 2 levels beyond you gain another spell-like ability, up to a new maximum spell level or less, until a 9th level spell at 18th level. The spell-like abilities are Charisma based.

Dragon Magic count as the Dragon Paladin's spellcasting for the purpose of prequisites and being advanced by prestige classes.

Aura of Stubbornness (Su): A 3rd level dragon paladin become immune to fear-effects, her and allies within 30 ft may also reroll any failed saving throws against mind-affecting effects.

Bonus Feat: At 3rd level, 6th level and each 6 level thereafter a Dragon Paladin gain a [fighter] bonus feat or a draconic feat she meet the prerequisite as a bonus feat.

Draconic Resistance (Ex): A 3rd level dragon paladin gain half her level as a bonus to her saving throws against effects which inflict paralysis and sleep effects. She also gain energy resistance equal to 3x her paladin level against her chosen energy type.

At 11th level she instead become immune to paralysis, sleep-effects and her chosen energy type.

Wyrm Blessing: At 4th level and each 4 level thereafter the Dragon paladin receive an ability from the list below, she may not take the same Wyrm Blessing twice.

Blindsense: You gain blindsense out of 5 ft per class level, at level 12 you gain blindsight out of a third of that distance.

Dragon's Eyes: You automatically succeed any Appraise check on mundane items and may use identify as a spell-like ability 3/day.

Dragon Lair: Once you gain this you may mark an area no larger than 500 ft x 500 ft per class level as your lair. You may scry on your lair at will and it is always under the effect of the alarm spell. You may change you lair with a 24 hour ritual and a gem worth 500 gp as material component.

Dragonscale Armor (Su): You are capable of summoning the scales of a dragon to form an incredibly protective armor. As a swift action you may summon her armor by focusing a lone dragonscale. The armor grant an Armor Bonus to AC equal 2 + 1/2 Dragon Paladin levels. The armor count as heavy armor when beneficial and light armor for the purpose of determining restrictions on your movement speed, class features and other abilities. This armor is worn like a second skin and thus has no arcane spell failure, armor penalty or max dexterity bonus. The Dragonscale Armor may be worn for a number of rounds per day equal to three time your class level, uses needed not be consecutive.

Improved Dragonbreath: The damage dealt by your dragonbreath increase by one dice category (from d6 to d8 usually) and the it range is doubled.

Kobold Minions: You gain a variant of the Leadership feat, except you do not gain a cohort and all your followers are kobolds. You do not take penalties to your leadership score if you treat your kobolds badly.

Pushing Dragonbreath: When using your breath weapon you may spend one extra charge on it to make it a pushing breath, making a single Bull Rush check against all creatures caught in the breath weapon as if you had the Improved Bull Rush and may use your Charisma instead of your Strength. You do not follow your enemies with the bull rush but the distance is not limited to 5 ft.

Tongue of Thunder: You can project your voice out to 1 mile per class level, making yourself understood only to creature with the dragon type or with the dragonblooded subtype. To any other creature your voice sound like thunder.

Wyvern Mount (Su): A 5th level Dragon paladin can summon a powerful Wyvern as a mount, it serve 1 hour per paladin per day and can be summoned a full-round action and dismiss as such. The use may not be consecutive but is used in 1 hour increment. You do not take penalties when riding your wyvern mount from the fact it is a nonstandard mount. Your wyvern mount gain all benefits of a Paladin's Special Mount of a Paladin of your Dragon Paladin level -4 and count as such for the purpose of prerequisites. If killed your mount cannot be summoned for 24 hours.

At 9th level, your wyvern mount gain a breath weapon dealing your class level or it HD in d8s (whichever is higher) of your chosen energy, which can be used each 1d4 rounds. The breath weapon may either be a 30-ft cone or a 60-ft line, chosen whenever it is used. The DC of the Dragon Breath is DC 10 + 1/2 HD + either your Constitution modifier or it own.

At 13th level your wyvern mount's size increase to huge which all benefits and penalties associated with the change.

At 17th level your wyvern mount can be summoned indefinitely and can be re-summoned immediately after being killed.

Spellsmite (Su): A 7th level Dragon Paladin may unleash a spell as she use her Elemental Smite ability. As a free action when she use her elemental smite she may cast a single spell or spell-like ability which require a standard action or less to cast. However she may only cast a spell with a matching energy subtype of her own chosen element.

Therefore a Red Dragon Paladin (CE Fire-Aligned) would be able to cast a [Fire] spell when she use her Elemental Smite.

Dragonslayer (Ex): A 10th level Dragon Paladin is an expert at slaying dragons, especially those opposed to her patron. Any weapons she wield gain a minimum of a +5 enchantment bonus and the Bane property against dragons that oppose your alignments. The effect only applies against dragons and not other creatures.

Penetrating Dragonbreath: A 13th level Dragon Paladin's Dragonbreath now deal a minimum of one point of damage per paladin level, no matter immunity or absorption of her opponent.

Timeless Body (Ex): After attaining 15th level, a Dragon Paladin no longer takes ability score penalties for aging and cannot be magically aged, now given the vitality of a dragon. Any penalties he may have already incurred, however, remain in place.

Bonuses still accrue, and the dragoon still dies of old age when his time is up.

Infinite Dragonbreath: A 19th level Dragon Paladin now recharge one dragonbreath's dice each round she does not use it.

Wyrmcall: A 20th level Dragon Paladin can call a single dragon with a CR equal or lower than her own -2, with at least one matching alignment and whose elemental subtype match her chosen element. This dragon willingly assist for 1 hour or until dismissed. If the dragon is attacked or threatened it will retaliate as normal. Whenever she use this ability she burn a use of her Elemental Smite for the day.

Alternate Class Feature[edit]

Dragonslayer: You do not gain your Wyvern Mount at 5th level, rather you gain your Dragonslayer ability normally at 10th level at 5th level instead. At 10th level your Dragonslayer ability now apply to all dragons, including other dragontouched creature, no matter their alignment.

Jousting Dragon Paladin: You gain Mounted Combat as a bonus feat at 1st level, additionally you gain your wyvern mount at 3rd level instead of 5th and it benefits are based on your dragon paladin level -2. You do not gain the Battlecaster class feature at 1st level.
