Truenamer[edit]

A truenamer is a spellcaster channeling his magic through the power of words. She speaks fragments of the universal ‘code’, altering the world around her for the better or worse. The art of truenaming was long-lost until it was rediscovered, as the truenamers of old wiped each other in terrible, worldshaking arguments.

A truenamer acts much like most casters, being able to cast spells to advance themselves and win fights. However they draw directly from their list, allowing them to act without preparing beforehand and without the restriction of spells known. Additionally they are able to use their unique magical knowledge to bolster their spell, imbuing them with powerful utterance.

Making a Truenamer[edit]

A truenamer is a powerful spellcaster that draws directly from her spell list when casting. While her spell list is varied, it tends to lack some of the harder hitting spells of the sorcerer/wizard, the great utility of the cleric and the shape changing ability of the druid. A truenamer is able to expand her lexicon of spells, drawing from other spell lists to bolster her own. Their spells usually focus on shaping the world around them, powerful sonic attacks and the power words spells. Like all casters, truenamers tend to be more vulnerable in direct combat.

Abilities: A truenamer's Intelligence is her prime ability score, handling both truespeak and her spellcasting. She could use a high Dexterity for her AC, initiative and reflex save, and high Constitution for her hit points and fortitude saves.

Races: Truenamer are very rare, being from a nearly forgotten discipline. Thus long-living races tend to make up most of the truenamers, but any races may become a disciple of truespeak.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Truenamer.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A truenamer is proficient with all simple weapons, light armors and all shields (except tower shields).

Spells: A truenamer is a spontaneous psychic spellcaster. A truenamer's key spellcasting ability score is her Intelligence, determining her bonus spells per day, the highest spell level she can cast and her spell's DCs. Unlike a normal spontaneous spellcaster such as the sorcerer, she does not have spells known, casting directly from her spell list. A truenamer recovers her spell after resting for 8 hours, like most spellcasters.

Despite being a psychic spellcaster, a truenamer's spells also have verbal components in addition to her emotion and thought components. Her spells can never benefit from the Silent Spell. Whenever a truename would cast a spell which requires a ranged touch attack, she instead delivers that spell as a targeted spell with the same range. If she makes multiple ranged attacks, she affects that many targets.

A truenamer choose their spells from the following list:

Truespeak (Ex): A truenamer is capable in the art of the eponymous Truespeak. She may roll special Truespeak checks, using her class level + her Intelligence modifier. Using Truespeak requires a free action unless specified otherwise and requires line of sight with the target creature or effect. If the truenamer fails a Truespeak check she cannot try it again for 24 hours, unless specified otherwise.

Divine Creature: A truenamer can use her truenaming with a DC equal to 10 + the creature's CR. If she succeeds she gain a +10 bonus to identify the creature on her next Knowledge check.

Divine Effect: A truenamer can use her truespeak instead of Psicraft, Spellcraft, Martial Lore or other skills to identify an ongoing effect.

Divine Status: A truenamer can use her truespeak with a DC equal to 10 + the creature's CR. If she succeeds she knows any condition afflicting the creature as well as its current hit points.

Learn Truename: A truly difficult task, the truenamer attempts to divine the creature's truename as a full-round action. The DC is equal to 20 + the creature's CR, if successful the truenamer has forever a +2 bonus on DCs when she casts a truenamer spell against the target. If she fails she cannot attempt to learn the target's true name for a year and day. A truenamer can only know a number of truename equal to her Intelligence modifier, although she may overwrite previously known truenames with new ones. Additionally, knowing a creature's true name this way has all the normal benefits of doing so, such as when summoning and binding outsiders.

Utterance (Su): A truenamer is able to splice her spells with fragments of powerful utterance, which modify and improve it. An utterance is used as a swift action and imbues the next spell the truenamer cast. If a truenamer does not start casting until the end of a turn when she pronounces an utterance, it is wasted. It is impossible to use two utterances on the same spell, using multiple utterances simply overwriting the previous one. At 1st level a truenamer knows a single utterance, learning a new utterance at 3rd level and each odd level thereafter. A truenamer can use her utterance class feature a number of times per day equal to 1 + half her class level + her Intelligence modifier.

A truenamer chooses her utterance from the following list:

Destructive Word: This utterance increases the damage of the imbued spell by +1 per damage dice. It has no effect on spells that do no damage.

Disruptive Word: After casting a spell imbued with this utterance, the truenamer makes a truespeak check. This effect is as the Bard's countersong ability, using the truespeak check as the perform check. This effect lasts for 1 round.

Dreaming Word: This utterance increases the imbued spell DC by 2 against targets which are Exhausted, Fatigued or Asleep.

Echoing Word: This utterance allows the truenamer to target a creature without line of effect with the imbued spell. The creature must be able to hear the verbal components of the spell or be unaffected.

Emotionless Word: This utterance allows the truenamer to cast the imbued spell by forgoing emotion components.

Focused Word: This utterance grants a +10 bonus on Concentration check made while casting the imbued word.

Harmless Word: This utterance alters the spell's damage so that it is non-lethal damage. If a creature is immune to non-lethal damage the spell still deals full lethal damage to it.

Lasting Word: This utterance increases the duration of the imbued spell by 50%. This stacks with Extend Spell.

Metaquick Word: This utterance allows the imbue spell to be cast as its normal casting time instead of a full-round action when modified by a metamagic feat. This utterance has no effect on a spell not modified by a metamagic feat.

Nurturing Word: This utterance grants fast healing to the target of the imbued spell. The fast healing lasts for 1 minute and is equal to half the spell's level. If used on a spell of the [Healing] subschool the fast healing becomes equal to the spell level.

Penetrating Word: This utterance allows the truenamer to roll to beat spell resistance twice when casting the imbued spell.

Solid Word: This utterance increases the hardness of any object or wall created by the imbued spell by 5.

Shaping Word: This utterance allows the truenamer to manipulate the spell's area as per the archmage's mastery of shaping High Arcana. This has no effect on spells without an area.

Teleporting Word: This utterance teleports the truenamer after casting the imbued spell. The range of the teleportation is 10 feet per spell level of the imbued spell.

Thoughtless Word: This utterance allows the truenamer to cast the imbued spell by forgoing thought components.

Thoughtful Word: This utterance allows the truenamer to cast the imbued spell by forgoing verbal components.

Knowledge Focus (Ex): At 2nd level, a truenamer gains half her level as a bonus on all Knowledge checks and may use them untrained.

Expanded Lexicon: At 4th level and each even level thereafter, a truenamer expands her spell list. She adds one spell of the highest level she can cast from the cleric, druid or sorcerer/wizard spell list. Alternatively she can add two spells of any level below the highest level she could cast from these lists. She may cast the chosen spells as if they were on the truenamer spell list.

Bonus Feat: At 5th, 10th and 15th level, a truenamer gains a single [Item Creation] or [Metamagic] feat as a bonus feat. She must meet the prerequisites of that bonus feat.

Cosmic Power (Su): A 20th level truenamer has unlocked incredible powers beyond reckoning. She is constantly under the effect of the fly, shield and spell turning spells.
